Why leaders should embrace Strategic Laziness
I had the pleasure of sharing my thoughts with FastCompany about “strategic laziness.”
As a leader, you’ll be told to delegate as much as possible, but concrete advice on leadership styles that promote delegation is sparse and confusing. “Strategic laziness” applied to your daily routine is a catalyst for reports to step in where you left a vacuum, kickstarting the delegation process.
After reading my article, a colleague shared a quote from Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord about officers and laziness. These quotes are so great that I’ll copy an abridged version below:
[on officers]
I distinguish four types. There are clever, hardworking, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. […] Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the mental clarity and strength of nerve necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is both stupid and hardworking; he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always only cause damage.
